I've got some libertarian tenancies. I tend to agree with the Wiccan Rede in that, "An it harm none, do what thou will." I don't see a problem with an individual using drugs or committing suicide for that matter, as long as society is not made to pay for the individual's actions. There should be a strict deterrent to prevent the individual from doing damage to society.

Of course, the devil is in the details. What constitutes damage? How do you measure harm? How do you prevent the whim of the majority from deciding arbitrarily that some actions are harmful while others are not?

I wish I had answers to these, and I admit that the actions that I think should be allowed are based solely on my own beliefs.

I'm not sure that you are describing "libertarian tendencies." I realize that there is some diversity in libertarian thought, but from my experience, the biggest difference between a Libertarian and a Liberal is the belief that the free market is capable of making social and economic "policy" better than any government can.

(That's probably not phrased very well, but I think my point gets through okay)

You may be right. I'm still thinking about it. I need to get into a serious discussion about the differences between different political positions.

Right BJK, I think Glenn Beck is a Libertarian, and he seems to definitely favor the free market over the government, although the government is the entity that will ultimately decide what is legal in the market, but since he's a conservative, he is never going to discourage the removal of the practice of corporations privately funding politicians. Damn the corporations of the free market to hell.

But anyways, about the legalization of weed, my opinion is...yes, but as others pointed out, with the same restrictions that are in place for our currently legal drugs.

If marijuana is made legal, the drug cartels that run Mexico might be put out of business, and it would be a definite boost to this country's economy right now.

Out of all of the currently illegal drugs, marijuana is the one that has the most right to be legalized, due to all of my aforementioned reasons, and the fact that it does less physical harm to the user's lungs than tobacco does. What's worse, lung cancer, or a memory problem? Tobacco and alcohol are the drugs that should be illegal in this country. How many people have o.d.'ed on weed? I think more people have o.d.'ed on water, actually.
